Secondary Education

Dr. Ginny Richerson, Coordinator

The Secondary Education program works with departments throughout the university in preparing students to become teachers in the sciences, arts, humanities, and vocational areas. Students wanting to be high school teachers or teach subjects that cross grade levels (such as music or agriculture) will major in a content area. In addition, core education courses prepare the student for teaching that content.

Education courses include an introduction to education; a human growth and development course; coursework related to lesson planning, lesson presentation, and assessment; and practice teaching in schools. The last semester (student teaching) takes place entirely in a school, teaching with a supervising classroom teacher.

Education courses and general university courses required in most secondary programs can be seen here.

Courses required in specific programs can be found by opening the advising sheet of your program of interest. Advisors in the content areas will answer questions; just tell them you are interested in teaching. Also, you may contact the secondary education coordinator through the link on the top right of this page.

Graduate programs in Secondary Education, including 5th year, masters, 30 above, and specialist are described through advising.
